He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater in the cabaret du Chat Noir, improving the performances with innovative colored backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and made a name for himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (having painted about a thousand watercolors).
