Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, improving performances by creating very innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving and established himself in the history of aquatint, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted around a thousand watercolors).
