He began his career with drawing, then moved on to soft ground etching, specifically aquatint in 1882. Concurrently, he started a career as a director and stage designer in 1886 at the shadow theatre of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (having painted around a thousand watercolors).
