He began his career with drawing and then moved to soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. In parallel, he started a career as a director and scenographer in 1886 at the shadow theatre of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with innovative color backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately one thousand watercolors).
