He began his career with drawing, then with intaglio engraving, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he embarked on a career as a stage director and set designer, in 1886, for the shadow theatre at the Chat Noir cabaret, performances he enhanced by creating very innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and made a name for himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
