Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing, then moved to intaglio printing and specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he began a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886, for shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing the shows by creating colorful sets that were very innovative. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making his mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately one thousand watercolors).
