He began his career with drawing and then copperplate engraving, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886, for shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing the performances by creating very innovative colored sets. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving and established himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
