He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a stage director and set designer, in 1886, for the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, improving the shows by creating innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted around a thousand watercolors).
