Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing, then moved on to soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and stage designer, in 1886, at the shadow theater in the cabaret du Chat Noir, enhancing performances through the creation of innovative color sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and made a significant mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
