He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching in 1882. In parallel, he started a career as a director and scenographer in 1886 at the shadow theater of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making his mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
