At the same time, he began a career as a director and set designer, in 1886, for the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating innovative multicolored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of aquatint, prints, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
