He began his career with drawing and then moved to soft ground engraving, specifically etching, in 1882. Concurrently, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886, at the shadow theater of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating very innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
