Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing, then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching in 1882. In parallel, he started a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886 at the Théâtre d'ombres at the cabaret Le Chat Noir, improving performances by creating very innovative colored backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and printmaking, establishing himself in the history of etching, engraving, woodcut, lithography, and watercolor (having painted around a thousand watercolors).
