Historical context :

Before acceding to the Belgian throne, Leopold II, who was then Duke of Brabant, was already interested in the idea of colonization. He dreamed of seeing Belgium, a country of modest size, certainly, but with technical and economic capacities, to take an interest in overseas territories which could help to enhance its commercial capacities, guarantee it access to raw materials and to produce from the land that it did not have, or even serve as an outlet for those - many at the time - who lived in poverty in Belgium.

Very rare and superb Belgian saber, based on the French officer's model, dating from the period of colonialization under Leopold II. The handle is made of bronze and wood, very solid, missing watermark, no play. The blade is in superb condition, still shiny, marked with the factory of ''FONSON & CIE FABRICANTS BRUXELLES''. The scabbard is made of thick leather and gilded brass, with its nuts in place, totally exceptional, very rare and 100% original guaranteed! ! !
