The Belgian army played an important role in World War I by resisting the German invasion and fighting alongside the allies for four years. After leading a costly initial defense through the battles of Liège, Mons, and Charleroi, the army retreated to the Yser front, where it eventually stabilized against the German occupier. The Belgian army was a ground force at the forefront of the French army during the Battle of the Marne and the Battle of Quesnoy, and fought during the 1918 campaign before the end of the war.
