Cuirassiers are the prestigious riders of the Heavy Cavalry Regiments, known for their distinctive helmet with plume and mane. Before battle, cavalry scouts the army; during battle, they support the infantry, exploit successes, or create the "event"; after battle, they pursue the enemy or cover the retreat. Cuirassiers support light cavalry, line cavalry, and help create the opportunity for a breakthrough! Thus, the Emperor at Waterloo would be furious with Ney for having used the so-called reserve cavalry too early...it was meant to exploit breaches in the enemy's defense at the most opportune moment!
