Concurrently, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, printing, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (having painted about a thousand watercolors).
