Henri Rivière (1864-1951) is a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground engraving, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he embarked on a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating colorful, very innovative sets. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving and established himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted around a thousand watercolors).
