He began his career with drawing, then printmaking in drypoint, specifically etching in 1882. Concurrently, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater of the Chat Noir cabaret, improving the shows by creating innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a significant mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
