Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886 for the shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances by creating very innovative colored backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted approximately a thousand watercolors).
