He began his career with drawing and then with soft engraving, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing the performances with innovative colored backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
