Concurrently, he started a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theatre of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with innovative colored backdrops. He later dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and made a significant mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
