He began his career with drawing and then etching, specifically using soft-ground etching in 1882. Concurrently, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater in the cabaret du Chat noir, enhancing performances by creating very innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
