He began his career with drawing, then moved to soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a stage director and scenographer in 1886 at the shadow theater in the Chat Noir cabaret, improving performances by creating innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
