Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with the creation of colorful, very innovative sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and made a mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
