He began his career with drawing and then with intaglio engraving, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he began a career as a director and set designer in 1886, working on shadow plays at the cabaret du Chat noir, which he enhanced by creating very innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and established himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
