Historical context :

The Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault, nicknamed Manu, is a French arms company located in Châtellerault, created in 1819 and disappeared in 1968, whose site was transformed into a cultural district. Established by royal order on July 14, 1819 , the true industrial heart of Châtellerault in the 19th and 20th centuries, the Arms Manufacture has, for 150 years, left its mark on the town and its population. From 34 workers in 1819, it had nearly 8,000 a century later, nicknamed the “Manuchards” during the First World War. The origin of the factory dates back to the closure of those located in the north and north-east of France. Following the Napoleonic wars and the invasion of part of France at that time, these establishments were in fact considered too close to the borders, in sensitive and strategic places. The factories of Maubeuge and Charleville for firearms, and Klingenthal for bladed weapons were thus closed in 1836, the last located near the borders being that of Mutzig, closed in 1870. The site of Châtellerault, in the center-west of the country, is therefore not the result of chance. The factory is established on the banks of the Vienne to capture the driving energy of the river. It closed its doors in 1968.
