The origins of the Italian Navy date back to the Savoyard navy, which was not well developed due to the landlocked nature of the Duchy of Savoy. Of course, the ancient maritime republics, duly recalled in its current flag, have a tradition much older and more developed than that of landlocked Savoy. It was only with the acquisition of the Kingdom of Sardinia that this State had to protect its coasts, between Nice, Oneille, and Loano, and the distant Sardinia, particularly against Moorish attacks, mostly in the form of acts of piracy.
