Description

Historical context:

The royal decree of June 18, 1836 describes a Turkish style saber for stewards, but provides little information about it. The blade is curved, the hilt is made of ivory, with a Turkish-style guard and a steel chain connecting the hilt to the pommel. The hilt is pierced to allow for the attachment of a wrist strap. The scabbard is made of steel with two bands and the chape is also made of steel.

DIMENSIONS:

Total length: 92 cm

Length without the scabbard: 105.2 cm

Blade length: 74.5 cm

Hilt length: 14 cm

Blade width: 2.85 cm

Object description:

I am proud to present this superb and rare Belgian general's saber in the mamluk style. The hilt is made of white horn. The blade is curved, massive, engraved in gold and blue. The saber features several approval markings: 'BRUXELLES - GOESLIE'. A central fuller, very beautiful and patinated blade, in its original condition. Steel scabbard, very sturdy with two rings. I am parting with it because it is not my field of collection; this piece is absolutely stunning and I am sure it will find a prominent place in the showcase of another enthusiast of Belgian military history! A unique and unfindable saber in any condition. A similar example is displayed in the Royal Army Museum in Brussels, very rare!!!

It is certain that by acquiring this splendid and rare saber of the Belgian army general, you will possess a very rare witness to the history of Belgium. You will also have a beautiful blade forged by the best Belgian gunsmiths of the time, as well as a memorabilia from the last dynasty of Saxe-Cobourg and Gotha. In summary, a magnificent and rare piece that must be seized!!!
