The cuirassiers are the prestigious horsemen of the Heavy Cavalry Regiments, known for their famous helmet with a crest and mane. Before the battle, the cavalry scouts the army; during the battle, they support the infantry, exploit their successes, or create the "event"; after the battle, they pursue the enemy or cover the retreat. The cuirassiers support the light cavalry, the line, and create the event for breaking a front! Thus, the Emperor at Waterloo was furious with Ney for using the so-called reserve cavalry too early... it was meant to exploit breaches in the opponent's defense at the most opportune moment!
