Historical context :
The model 1882 infantry officer saber is a French saber, adopted in 1882 by the Artillery Service for senior and junior infantry officers.
The inspiration for the 1882 model comes from the fantasy infantry saber of the African army. This model devotes the system of attaching the scabbard to a single bail, which has become a standard: it is the first saber model which has only one original bail.
The original saber is quite simple, which pushes many officers to have "fancy" models made, keeping the standard blade, but modifying the frame (number of branches, various metals, etc.)2.
This model had its heyday during the war of 1914-18. It was worn by officers in outgoing uniform until August 13, 1925, the date of its repeal. It now equips the cadets of the National School of Fire Officers.
Unlike the 1845 model for junior infantry officers which has a corresponding model for senior officers, the 1882 infantry officer saber is regulatory for all officers, juniors and superiors of infantry. You can even find regulatory 1882 models bearing the general's stars on the beak of the tray.

Piece found in Gerpinnes in Belgium, in its original state for any informed collector, passionate about WW1. Very pleasant to hold in the hands and even more pleasant to observe in the window!
