He began his career with drawing and then moved to soft-ground engraving, specifically etching, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a stage director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theater in the Chat Noir cabaret, improving the performances with the creation of innovative colored sets. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, establishing himself in the history of etching, prints, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
