The Nimcha, from the Arabic Nim (half), etymologically designates a short weapon (like a naval weapon) while its length is that of a saber. It is the saber of the Berber cavalry of the Middle Atlas, whose diffusion to southern Spain and northern Algeria was ensured by conquests and commercial contacts with the Berber empires of Morocco. It is a typical saber (sword) of the Amazigh tribes of the Middle Atlas in Morocco that allowed for a quality of mastery at the wrist combined with impressive cutting power. The Nimcha offers very good protection for the wrist and hand, making it highly valued by both cavalrymen and foot soldiers. The Salé pirates also adopted it in an identical but shortened version. The handle is generally in the shape of a canine, the blade is slightly curved with grooves called channels, which number one, two, or even three.
