The 1821 model saber was proposed as early as 1817 but was only adopted on July 31, 1821, by Marshal Victor, hence its name. It was used by infantry officers until 1845, when the new 1845 model was adopted, and then again adopted in 1854 by the non-commissioned officers of Napoleon III's Imperial Guard, undergoing some changes. After 1870, it was still worn by non-commissioned officers of the military justice. There are also several variants, for example, for the national guard, the royal guard, and for officer cadets from military schools (with the mention “given by the King”).
