(ROMANTIC DAGGERS by Main TRÉHARD) | Excerpt from the Gazette des Armes No. 197, February 1990.
Romanticism emerged in France during the Restoration and extended until the July Monarchy. This predominant current of artistic and literary life during the late 18th and 19th centuries varies by country, but it shares a number of common traits worldwide: a rejection of the imitation of the Ancients and the rules of classicism, the birth of a new mode of sensitivity, individualistic expression venturing into sentimental outpouring. Romanticism, at least in its initial phase, is characterized by a passionate subjectivity that drives the artist to freely communicate their feelings, thus tending to divine nature, to return to legendary sources, folklore, and a deep taste for all forms of dislocation, both in time (rediscovery of the Middle Ages) and space (exoticism, fascination with the East, attachment to modern Greece, etc.). Enigmatic works by anonymous artists, one cannot approach the realm of romantic daggers by speaking in generalities, simply because these weapons abide by no rules regarding their creation or form...
