The Belgian army is divided into six "army divisions" (the equivalent of infantry divisions in other armies), complemented by a cavalry division. Each division was composed of three mixed brigades, a cavalry regiment, an artillery regiment, and various transport units.

The nominal strength of a division ranged from 25,500 to 32,000 men of all ranks, with a total of eighteen infantry battalions, one cavalry regiment, eighteen machine guns, and forty-eight guns. Two divisions (the 2nd and the 6th) each had an additional artillery detachment, totaling sixty guns.

The cavalry division had two brigades of two regiments each, three horse batteries, a cyclist battalion, a company of cyclists-pioneers, and support units. Its total strength amounted to 2,500 sabers, 450 cyclists, and twelve guns.
