During the battles of September - October 1830, a number of Belgian cavalrymen from the regiments described above deserted and joined the Belgian revolution. In October 1830, the provisional government created 2 regiments of chasseurs à cheval, two regiments of lancers, and one regiment of cuirassiers. For example, the 1st regiment of lancers was formed from Belgian elements of the 4th, 5th Dragoons, and 10th Lancers of the Netherlands.
In 1833, a regiment of guides was created, and in 1836 a 2nd regiment of cuirassiers.
The armament of the cavalrymen consists of:
- The curved saber model 1822 for all.
- Except for the cuirassiers equipped with a straight saber and a breastplate made in Liège.
- A carbine and/or a percussion pistol.
- A lance made of ash with a tricolor flag for the lancers.

I am proud to present this superb, rare, and massive Belgian cavalry officer’s saber. The handle is covered in black leather, filigreed with a three-pronged guard. The blade is curved and massive. The saber has several approval markings: “other markings: I 1089 + GD + LION BELGE 1888 + LD". A central fuller, a very beautiful and patinated blade, in its original condition. Steel sheath, very sturdy. I am parting with it because this is not my area of collection; the piece is absolutely stunning, and I am sure it will find a prime spot in the display case of another enthusiast of Belgian military history along with the whistle lanyard + belt + transport chain! A truly unique saber, impossible to find in any condition. A similar specimen can be seen in the royal army museum in Brussels, very rare!!!
