Victoria married her cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha in 1840. Her reign of 63 years and seven months is the second longest in the history of the United Kingdom after that of Elizabeth II. Known as the Victorian era, it marks a period of profound social, economic, and technological changes in the UK and a rapid expansion of the British Empire. She was the last British monarch of the House of Hanover, which had ruled over the British Isles since 1714, as her son and heir, Edward VII, belonged to the lineage of his father, the House of Saxe-Cobourg and Gotha.
