In 1845, the regulations now state that senior officers, subordinates, and even non-commissioned officer adjutants must carry the sword in service dress. This model standardizes the weaponry for these ranks.
Two models are created for this sword: one for the adjutants and subordinate officers, and one for the senior officers. The main difference between these models is the blade, slightly curved with two fullers for the adjutants and subordinate officers, and straight with four fullers for the senior officers.
In 1855, the sword is slightly modified: the leather scabbard is replaced by a steel sheet scabbard (except for the adjutants who retain the leather scabbard until 1870), and the blade for subordinate officers is narrowed: it will henceforth be called the 1855 model sword. It was still in use during World War I, as combat officers found the 1882 model they were assigned too fragile.
It is still in service, equipping the 1st and 2nd infantry regiments of the Republican Guard.
