Description

Historical context:

The Model 1882 infantry officer's saber is a French saber, adopted in 1882 by the Artillery Service for senior and junior infantry officers.

The inspiration for the Model 1882 comes from the fancy infantry saber of the African army. This model establishes the system for attaching the scabbard with a single ring, which has become a standard: it is the first saber model that has only one original ring.

The original saber is quite simple, which leads many officers to have "fancy" models made, retaining the regulation blade but modifying the hilt (number of branches, various metals...).

This model had its heyday during the 1914-18 war. It was worn by officers in dress uniform until August 13, 1925, the date of its repeal. It now equips the cadet officers of the École nationale supérieure des officiers de sapeurs-pompiers.

Unlike the 1845 model for junior infantry officers, which has a corresponding model for senior officers, the 1882 infantry officer saber is regulated for all officers, both junior and senior. One can even find regulation 1882 models sporting the stars of a general on the tip of the knuckle guard.
