Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then with soft-ground etching, specifically etching in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and scenographer in 1886, at the shadow theater in the cabaret du Chat noir, performances that he enhanced by creating innovative colored backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving and established himself in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
