Description

History of the model:

Here is a superb and rare Russian dragon saber model 1881. This saber equipped the dragoons (cavalry) of the Empire until its end in 1917, as well as during the bloody Russian Civil War (1917-1923). The 1881 dragoon model would later be taken up by the Soviets with very different markings until the early 1950s.

DIMENSIONS:

Total length: 103.5 cm

Length without the scabbard: 100.29 cm

Blade length: 85.49 cm

Handle length: 14.80 cm

Blade width: 3.4 cm

Description:

This very beautiful and rare saber is referred to by collectors as "Dragunka" in reference to the term "the dragoons." It is a type of saber called "shashka," a name given by the Russians to sabers that attach to the belt on the outside of the scabbard. The handle is made of wood and brass, with no play. Marked "ZLAT OF FABR" (IMPERIAL MANUFACTURE OF ZLATOOUST, an old marking from before 1900, from the period of Alexander II or Alexander III, very rare) with the letter "C" as well as regimental markings: "3B. 28 AP. BR. 13" (in Cyrillic: Artillery Battalion). The saber was reused during WWII by a Soviet officer, recovered from ex-East Germany. The leather of the scabbard has probably been restored, a kind of painted canvas or lacquer. The blade is marked "ZALTOUST ORUGIENOYA FABRIKA" (IMPERIAL MANUFACTURE OF ZLATOOUST) on the other side with "C" + "P." The blade is still shiny, in its original state with signs of age, needing cleaning, still featuring its original brown leather strap. A magnificent and very rare Russian saber, shashka that can easily decorate your display case dedicated to the sabers of the Russian Empire from the time of the last Tsar Nicholas II. A saber that likely participated in combat during WWI as well as during the Russian and Polish civil wars! Very rare and guaranteed 100% original! A beautiful piece, pleasant to hold and even more enjoyable to admire in a showcase. A superb saber that has retained its period luster! Very rare in this condition and 100% original, seize it urgently!!!

THE LOT: SABER + SCABBARD

I acquired this magnificent saber for my collection, but I am parting with it for financial reasons and hope it finds a special place in the display case of another enthusiast.
