HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
The term Freemasonry refers to a set of selective social spaces that recruit their members by co-optation and practice initiatory rites referencing Masonic secrets and the art of building. Formed from very diverse historical and social phenomena, it seems to appear in 1598 in Scotland (Schaw Statutes), then in England in the seventeenth century. It is described, depending on the eras, countries, and forms, as an "essentially philosophical and philanthropic association," as a "system of morality illustrated by symbols," or as an "initiatic order." Organized into obediences since 1717 in London, the so-called "speculative" Freemasonry — that is, philosophical — refers to the Ancient duties of the so-called "operative" English "masonry" formed by builders' corporations. It draws its sources from a set of foundational texts written between the 14th and 18th centuries.

Patinated sword in superb find condition (very rare!!!).
