Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then moved on to soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. Concurrently, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886, working on shadow theater at the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with the creation of innovative colored backdrops. He then devoted himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, prints, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolor (he painted about a thousand watercolors).
