Description

Historical context :

In 1845, the regulations now indicate that senior officers, junior officers and even non-commissioned warrant officers must have the saber in service dress. This model therefore standardizes the weaponry for these ranks.

Two models are created for this saber: one for warrant officers and junior officers, and one for senior officers. The main difference between these models is the blade, slightly curved with two hollow sides for warrant officers and junior officers, and straight with four hollow sides for senior officers.

In 1855, the saber was slightly modified: the leather sheath was replaced by a sheet steel sheath (except for warrant officers who kept the leather sheath until 1870), and the junior officer's blade was narrowed: it will henceforth be called the model 1855 sabre. It was still in use during the First World War, the combat officers considered the model 1882 which had been assigned to them too fragile. It is still in service, and equips the 1st and 2nd infantry regiment of the Republican Guard.
