Political and event history (1800-1861)
The Republicans held the presidency from 1801 to 1825. In 1808, the slave trade was officially abolished on American soil. The country engaged in westward expansion through colonization, purchase, or war. In 1803, Napoleon sold vast territories known as French Louisiana to the United States: this purchase allowed for the doubling of the area of the United States. The following year, President Thomas Jefferson sent the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore these new territories by traveling up the Missouri River.
