The Ottoman Empire, historically known in Western Europe as the Turkish Empire, Ottoman Turkey, or simply Turkey, is an empire founded in the late 13th century in northwestern Anatolia, in the town of Söğüt (now the province of Bilecik), by the Oghuz tribal chief Osman I, the founder of the Ottoman dynasty. After 1354, the Ottomans entered Europe, and with the conquest of the Balkans, the Ottoman Beylik transformed into a transcontinental empire. After surrounding it and reducing it to its capital and a few scraps, the Ottomans ended the Byzantine Empire in 1453 by conquering Constantinople under the reign of Sultan Mehmed II.
