Historical context :
The model 1882 cavalry saber is a French saber, intended for the light cavalry and heavy cavalry troops. This is the first time that a saber model is identical for all cavalry, only the length of the blade differentiates them. In an effort to standardize, this model is therefore identical for heavy and light cavalry. It should be noted that this is also the first time that we tried to provide light cavalry with a straight blade, this will be doomed to failure and we will quickly return to the 1822 model. The general failure of this model fact that a new model of saber will be created shortly after, the model 1896 saber, and many experts are wondering about the actual putting into service of the model 1882. Generally speaking, the bladed weapon begins to lose its his interest, given the devastating power of firearms.

Blade length: 95 cm for cuirassiers (1st size), 92.5 cm for dragons (2nd size), and 87 cm for light cavalry (3rd size).
Blade type: straight blade, a hollow side on each side.
Heel width: 3 cm.
Mount: brass, three branches (even for heavy cavalry).
Handle: corded wood covered with sheepskin, with brass filigree.
Scabbard: sheet steel, a bail bracelet.
