Description

Historical context:

The sappers of the First Empire were an elite military engineering unit, attached to the Imperial Guard, created by decree on July 16, 1810. They were responsible for engineering works, fortification, and demolition, but also for the operation of water pumps for fire safety in the imperial palaces. Their numbers varied, increasing from 104 sappers in 1810 to approximately 600 men in 1814.

DIMENSIONS:

Total length: 86.4 cm

Blade length: 66.1 cm

Handle length: 18.6 cm

Blade width: 3.7 cm

Description:

Here is a superb and rare saber from the sappers in the style of the First Empire known as "cock-headed." The handle is made of gilded and engraved bronze. The blade is curved and has remnants of a marking at the heel, with the sign "III" on the handle and scabbard, all perfectly homogeneous. The scabbard is in good condition, with antique bronze and leather fittings that have survived in their original state, which is very rare for this type of saber! Discovered in an attic and then refreshed and maintained by its owner, the blade is preserved in grease to prevent rust. It is a very beautiful specimen that perfectly illustrates the ingenuity and ferocity of the sappers of the First Empire. The piece is absolutely stunning! A very fine piece, very pleasant to hold and even more to admire in its display case. Serious offers only!
