During the fighting of September - October 1830, a number of Belgian cavalrymen from the aforementioned regiments deserted and joined the Belgian revolution. In October 1830, the Provisional Government created 2 regiments of horse riflemen, two regiments of lancers, and one regiment of cuirassiers. For example, the 1st regiment of lancers was formed from Belgian elements of the 4th, 5th Dragons, and 10th Dutch Lancers.
In 1833, a Guides regiment was created, and in 1836 a 2nd regiment of cuirassiers.
The armament of the cavalrymen consists of:
- A curved saber model 1822 for all.
- Except for the cuirassiers equipped with a straight saber and a cuirass made in Liège.
- A carbine and/or a percussion pistol.
- A spear made of ash with a tricolor flag for the lancers.
DIMENSIONS:
Total length: 110.4 cm
Length without the scabbard: 105.2 cm
Length of the blade: 89.7 cm
Length of the grip: 15.5 cm
Width of the blade: 3 cm
Description of the object:
I am proud to present this superb, rare, and massive Belgian cavalry officer's saber. The grip is covered with black leather, filigreed with a three-pronged design. The blade is curved and massive. The saber features several approval markings: "other markings: J 106 + GD + LION BELGE 1842 + JS". A central fuller, very beautiful and patinated blade, in its original condition. Scabbard made of steel, very sturdy. I am parting with it as it is not my area of collection; the piece is absolutely superb, and I am sure it will find a special place in the display case of another enthusiast of Belgian military history! A truly unique saber that is impossible to find in any condition. A similar example is visible at the Royal Army Museum in Brussels, very rare!!!
It is certain that by acquiring this splendid and rare saber from the Belgian army troops, you will possess a very rare witness to the history of Belgium. You will also own a beautiful blade forged by the best Belgian gunsmiths of the time, as well as a memento of the last dynasty of Saxe-Cobourg and Gotha. In summary, a magnificent and rare piece to be absolutely seized!!!
